ABS Braking System Repairs
The ABS system is usually made up of wheel speed sensors on each of the four wheels, a main ABS computer, and wires connecting all the sensors to the computer.
ABS or Antilock Braking Systems were first used on passenger vehicles in the 1980's and are now widely used by all vehicle manufacturers. When performing an emergency braking maneuver, if a wheel stops turning while the vehicle is still moving, the driver loses control of that wheel, and may be unable to steer the vehicle around an obstacle while braking. Pressing the emergency stop button shows what happens when a wheel locks up. The driver applies the brakes, which pressurizes the brake fluid, forcing the brakes to apply at each wheel. Each wheel on the vehicle is also fitted with a wheel speed sensor.
The speed sensor tells the ABS computer how fast each wheel is turning. If one wheel stops turning when all the other wheels are still rotating, the ABS computer causes the ABS controller to rapidly pulse the brake fluid pressure going to that wheel, momentarily releasing then reapplying the brake to prevent the wheel from skidding. This normally causes a buzzing sensation through the brake pedal and may flash an ABS light in the instrument cluster.
