Fuel Pump

Float Image

The electric fuel pump collects fuel from the gas tank and delivers it to the fuel injectors. The fuel level sensor measures the amount of fuel inside of the fuel tank by use of a float and potentiometer.

Most gasoline vehicles use an electric fuel pump inside the tank to supply high-pressure fuel to the engine. The submerged pump prevents overheating. A failing pump, whether sudden or partial, can reduce fuel delivery and cause power loss under load. The fuel level sensor, integrated into the pump module, has a float and metal rod with a variable resistor. As fuel levels change, the sensor adjusts the voltage signal sent to the fuel gauge and engine computer, indicating the remaining fuel range.
