Shock absorbers and suspension struts, or dampers, ensure a smooth ride and keep your wheels in contact with the road. Shock absorbers are typically at the rear, while struts combine the shock absorber and spring, usually at the front. They control the suspension’s movement, with oil-filled cylinders and pistons regulating how the vehicle handles bumps. Worn dampers cause excessive bouncing, reduced traction during braking and acceleration, and less responsive steering. Replacing worn dampers restores handling and ride quality.

Shock absorbers and suspension struts, collectively known as dampers, are essential for maintaining a smooth ride and keeping the vehicle’s wheels in contact with the road. Shock absorbers are typically mounted near the rear springs, while suspension struts combine the shock absorber and spring into a single unit, usually at the front. Dampers use a cylinder filled with oil and a piston to manage suspension movement. The piston’s valve adjusts oil flow to control damping. Small road imperfections result in minimal restriction, but larger movements make the valve more restrictive to prevent excessive suspension compression. As dampers wear, their effectiveness diminishes, leading to symptoms such as increased vehicle dive and squat during acceleration and braking, reduced steering responsiveness, and excessive bouncing. These issues lead to poor traction, increased stopping distances, and accelerated tire wear. Replacing worn dampers helps restore vehicle handling, ensuring a smoother, safer, and more responsive ride.
